A sentence worth pausing over

Reading does not have to be fast. Some sentences deserve a longer pause: first notice what they say, then listen to how they say it.

Begin with one sentence

This column does not rush to summarize an entire book. It enters through one sentence, paragraph or image. First we preserve the original structure, then try a more natural Chinese expression, and finally explain why the two versions differ.

Literal and natural translation are not opposites

A literal version helps us see the frame of the original sentence. A natural version considers Chinese tone, rhythm and imagery. A good reading places them side by side and shows what each choice changes.
