Breaking the Silence

Breaking the Silence: Veterans' Untold Stories from the Great War to Afghanistan by Canadian military historian Ted Barris. This 2009 Thomas Allen Publishers hardcover is the first edition, second printing, with the original pictorial dust jacket. The number line ends in 2, and the book contains 290 pages.

Drawing on interviews and personal recollections, Barris preserves the experiences of Canadian service members across conflicts from the First World War through Afghanistan. The volume focuses on memories that veterans often kept private, including combat, captivity, loss, survival, and the lasting emotional consequences of military service. It is illustrated with numerous black-and-white historical photographs.

This copy is inscribed and signed by Ted Barris on the title page. The blue-ink inscription includes the phrase “To go beyond remembrance,” followed by the author's large signature, and is dated Dec. '09. Some additional handwriting on the page is difficult to decipher fully.

The book and dust jacket are in very good overall condition as reported by the seller, with minor visible shelf and edge wear to the jacket. The dust jacket is now protected in a removable clear plastic cover. The photographed interior spread appears clean, bright, and readily legible, with no visible stains, tears, foxing, or annotations on those representative pages.
