Author profile

Robert J. Sawyer

Robert J. Sawyer is a legendary Canadian hard science-fiction novelist, futurist, and scriptwriter widely revered as the "Dean of Canadian Science Fiction" and celebrated as one of only eight writers in history to secure the genre’s definitive global triple crown. Born in Ottawa and residing in Mississauga, Ontario, Sawyer developed an early passion for technology and cosmic exploration that informed his studies at Toronto Metropolitan University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Radio and Television Arts. Over a career spanning more than 20 bestselling novels, he earned international acclaim by exploring complex philosophical questions through accessible, rationality-driven prose. He is the sole Canadian writer to win the Nebula Award for The Terminal Experiment, the Hugo Award for Hominids, and the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Mindscan, alongside a record-setting fourteen Aurora Awards. His intellectual range is anchored by major hits like Calculating God, The Oppenheimer Alternative, and FlashForward—the latter of which he adapted as a scriptwriter for the popular ABC television network drama series. Appointed as a Member of both the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario for his contributions to literature, Sawyer has channeled personal adversity into creative triumph following a cancer diagnosis. Moving boldly through 2025 and 2026, he has captivated sci-fi communities by writing original hard-SF blocks for Audible, culminating in the 2026 print and ebook releases of The Downloaded 2: Ghosts in the Machine via Shadowpaw Press alongside his career-capstone nonfiction volume, Sawyer on Science Fiction.
