Maeve Binchy

Maeve Binchy (May 28, 1940 – July 30, 2012) was a beloved, internationally bestselling Irish novelist, playwright, and short story writer whose compassionate storytelling captured the essence of ordinary lives. Born in Dalkey, County Dublin, and educated at University College Dublin, she worked as a teacher of French, Latin, and history before pivoting to a prolific career as a columnist for The Irish Times. She transitioned seamlessly into fiction with her 1982 breakout debut novel, Light a Penny Candle, ultimately going on to sell over 40 million books translated into 37 languages. Renowned for her humorous and deeply empathetic portrayals of small-town Irish life and human relationships, her famous works Circle of Friends and the Oprah's Book Club selection Tara Road were successfully adapted into major feature films.
