Judy Rebick

Judy Rebick (born 1945) is a U.S.-born Canadian journalist, writer, political activist, and feminist whose public work has connected women’s rights, democratic participation, and independent media. Born in Reno, Nevada, she moved with her family to Toronto at age nine. She came to national prominence during the 1980s as a pro-choice organizer and advocate for women’s rights, and served as president of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women from 1990 to 1993.

Rebick subsequently brought political discussion to broadcast media as co-host of CBC Newsworld’s Face Off from 1994 to 1998, before hosting the women’s discussion program Straight From the Hip. In 2001 she helped establish rabble.ca and became its founding publisher. Her writing has examined Canadian feminism, participatory democracy, and social movements. It includes the catalogued Imagine Democracy (2000); Ten Thousand Roses: The Making of a Feminist Revolution (2005), an oral history drawing on the efforts of more than one hundred feminists in Canada; Transforming Power: From the Personal to the Political (2009); and Occupy This! (2012).

In June 2026, Trent University conferred on Rebick an Honorary Doctor of Laws. She continues to publish commentary through rabble.ca, where her author archive documents a long association with the independent news organization.
