John R. Saul

The Right Honourable John Ralston Saul CC OOnt (born June 19, 1947) is a world-renowned Canadian essayist, novelist, and public philosopher whose profound critiques of technocratic rationalism, globalization, and civic citizenship have positioned him as one of the world's premier contemporary intellectuals. Born in Ottawa and holding a PhD in history from King's College London, he initially built a successful early commercial career as an investment manager and corporate oil executive before turning his full creative energy to global literature. Saul vaulted into international intellectual prominence with his philosophical trilogy—launched by his landmark 1992 masterpiece, Voltaire’s Bastards: The Dictatorship of Reason in the West, alongside the Governor General’s Literary Award-winning The Unconscious Civilization—which powerfully unmasked how modern managers and specialists use corporate language to distort democracy. Equal parts provocateur and humanist, his extensive bibliography includes the visionary geopolitical study The Collapse of Globalism and the Reinvention of the World, his historical re-evaluation A Fair Country, and acclaimed novels like The Birds of Prey. A fierce champion of freedom of expression and Indigenous rights, he served as the elected International President of PEN International from 2009 to 2015, co-founded the Institute for Canadian Citizenship to foster civic inclusion, and was appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada.
