Jill Santopolo is a novelist and children’s-book editor whose work spans adult fiction, middle-grade mysteries, and series for younger and young-adult readers. She earned a BA in English literature from Columbia University and an MFA in writing for children from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. Her adult-fiction debut, The Light We Lost, was published by G. P. Putnam’s Sons in 2017. Structured around the enduring connection between Lucy and Gabe, whom the novel first places together in New York on September 11, 2001, it examines love, personal choices, and the directions lives take over time. Alongside her novels for adults, Santopolo has written three children’s and young-adult series, bringing experience across readerships to her work as both an author and editor.
Santopolo is Vice President and Publisher of Philomel, the Penguin Young Readers imprint she joined through Penguin Random House in 2009 and became publisher of in 2023. Her editorial work includes books for young readers by a range of writers and public figures. The Light We Lost was chosen as a Reese’s Book Club selection in February 2018; her work has also been translated into more than thirty-five languages and has appeared on several bestseller lists, including The New York Times list.
