Greg Proops (born 1959) is an American stand-up comedian, improviser, actor, voice performer, and writer. Associated with San Francisco’s comedy scene and later based in Hollywood, he is widely known for appearances on the British and American versions of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, where his rapid verbal play and improvisational work reached international television audiences.
Alongside live comedy, Proops has worked across television, animation, film, and audio. His official biography credits roles and voice work connected with Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Bob the Builder. He also presents The Smartest Man in the World, a live-recorded comedy and culture podcast staged in cities in North America, Europe, and Oceania.
Proops brought the cultural interests heard in that podcast to print with The Smartest Book in the World: A Lexicon of Literacy, A Rancorous Reportage, A Concise Curriculum of Cool. Published by Atria Books, the volume ranges across history, film, music, poetry, punctuation, and baseball in a comic reference-book format.
