The Honourable Brian Tobin PC OC (born October 21, 1954) is a prominent Canadian corporate executive and former politician who served as the 6th Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador from 1996 to 2000. Born in Stephenville, Newfoundland, and educated at King's College and Memorial University, he spent nearly two decades in federal politics as a Member of Parliament, famously serving as federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans in Jean Chrétien’s cabinet. During this tenure, he gained international fame as "Captain Canada" for his aggressive stance against foreign overfishing during the 1995 Turbot War dispute with Spain. He returned to provincial politics to lead the Liberal Party, serving a successful term as premier before briefly returning to federal politics as Minister of Industry. Following his departure from public office in 2002, Tobin transitioned into corporate governance, authoring his bestselling memoir All in Good Time and holding high-profile corporate roles, notably serving as the long-time Vice-Chair of BMO Financial Group.
